About the CPA Exam: Registration and Preparation

Congratulations on finishing school! Now it’s time to take the next step in becoming a USCPA. Here is a few helpful tips you should know about the CPA Examination, how to register and prepare for the exam.

1.The Uniform CPA Examination is a test created to protect the public’s interest by ensuring that only qualified candidates become licensed CPAs in the United States.

2.A score of 75 or greater is required to pass each section of the CPA Exam.

3.Passing the Exam is an 18-month process, so develop a realistic schedule that will take into account the necessary study time and when you’ll take each section. Remember to set aside time for personal and professional obligations during your Exam journey.

There are four sections to the Uniform CPA Examination® (Exam)

1.Auditing and Attestation (AUD)

2.Business Environment and Concepts (BEC)

3.Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR)

4.Regulation (REG)

You have a maximum of four and a half hours to complete the Exam:

5 minutes — Welcome/enter launch code

5 minutes — Confidentiality/section information

4 hours — Testing time

15 minutes — Break after third testlet (option to pause Exam timer)

5 minutes — Survey

Each of the four Exam sections is broken down into five smaller sections called testlets. These testlets feature: 1. multiple-choice questions (MCQs)2. task-based simulations (TBSs). In the case of BEC, you also have to complete three written communication tasks. The number of MCQs and TBSs tested varies depending upon the specific section taken. You will receive at least one research question (research-oriented TBS) in the AUD, FAR and REG sections. To complete them, you will have to search the related authoritative literature and find an appropriate reference.

During each Exam section, you will be offered a 15-minute break after the first TBS testlet. This is about midway through the section (two hours). In addition to the 15-minute break, you may also take optional breaks after all other testlets but you cannot pause the Exam timer. The timer will continue to run.

NCD (National Candidate Database)

The NCD is a database of CPA candidate information created to help NASBA, Boards of Accountancy,

the AICPA and the testing centers protect the personal data provided by candidates during application and Exam processes.

It is a central repository for all CPA Exam candidate information.

With the ability to track a candidate’s history throughout the duration of the CPA Exam life cycle,

the NCD is a powerful tool for managing testing information.

CPAES (CPA Examination Services)

CPAES is NASBA’s flagship program. It provides a comprehensive array of CPA Exam-related services to 33 participating states and territories. A few of these services include application processing, credential evaluations and score reporting.

NASBA’s Role in Your Application Process

NASBA stands for the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy.

Each U.S. state and territory has its own Board of Accountancy. NASBA’s mission is to enhance the effectiveness and advance the common interests of all 55 of these Boards. NASBA provides numerous services that encourage uniformity across the country in order to facilitate interstate practice.

NASBA takes on the role of a central clearinghouse – where all states and territories submit information on eligible candidates, and from which all states and territories receive advisory scores and other examination data.

In regards to the CPA Exam application process, the 55 states and territories can be separated into three different groups:
1.Those represented by CPAES for application processing
2.Non-CPAES states and territories that don’t require a Payment Coupon for application processing
3.Non-CPAES states and territories that require a Payment Coupon for application processing

How to Register for CPA Examination

1.Apply Online

2.Send transcripts to State Board

3.Receive Authorization to Test (ATT)

4.Select Exams and pay NASBA Fees (subject to change)

5.Choose an exam subject and pay the fee

The qualifying requirements to take the CPA Exam vary by state and jurisdiction, PrimeVest can check if you’re eligible to take the exam and assist in registration, so you can just focus on preparing for the exam.

Depending on your location, registering is done through either your State Board of Accountancy or NASBA CPA Examination Services (CPAES). Based on jurisdiction, you will pay the associated fees (some Non-CPAES states and territories require Payment Coupon for application processing)

Once you’ve submitted all required information and fees, CPAES or Board of Accountancy will send your application information to the NCD for processing. This packet of application information is known as the Authorization To Test (ATT). Once the NCD has successfully processed and accepted the ATT, you will receive your Notice to Schedule (NTS), which enables you to schedule your testing appointment through Prometric.
