Your 6 steps to become an US CPA

  • 1. Check eligibility

    Basic Requirements

To be eligible to take the CPA exam, you need at least 120 semester hours of college coursework which includes Accounting and Business subjects. Each of the 52 state boards varies with their requirements, please contact us for more information.

    State Boards’ Requirements

The CPA license is issued at the jurisdiction level. To become a CPA, you must be declared eligible for the examination, and subsequently licensed, by the Board of Accountancy in one of the 55 U.S. jurisdictions. The Constitution of the U.S. grants each state or territory the power to regulate the practice of the professions within that jurisdiction’s borders. In most jurisdictions, these powers are carried out by a “Board of Accountancy.” These Boards of Accountancy are made up of appointed individuals and staff (many of whom are CPAs) who are charged with the responsibility of carrying out the laws promulgated by the legislatures and providing an appropriate examination for licensure. The Board of Accountancy is an administrative agency that handles the day-to-day operations relative to regulating the practice of accountancy including activities involved with entry into the profession. In some cases, the Board of Accountancy contracts out certain examination-related tasks such as the review of applications and collection of examination fees.

  • 3. Apply for the exams
The CPA Exam is a 14-hour, computer-based test comprised of four sections:
    • Audit and Attestation (AUD)
    • Business Environment and Concepts (BEC)
    • Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR)
    • Regulations (REG)
    AICPA

  • 5. Take the test

    What are the exam schedules?

There are four testing windows each year. Pick those which suit you best. Exams take place in:
    • January-February
    • July-August
    • April-May
    • October-November

Exam Passing Score: 75 or above

  • 6. Get the license
After successfully passing all four sections of the CPA exam, the next step is to complete the other requirements for obtaining a CPA license in the state in which you plan to ultimately practice as a CPA. Just like requirements for the CPA exam, requirements (like education and work experience) for a CPA license vary from state to state. Contact us for more information.
For example, many states require at least one year of public accounting work experience to qualify for a CPA license; while others accept different types of work experience in place of public accounting experience (such as teaching, self-employment and part-time employment). To add to the complexity, some states have more specific requirements, such as a specified amount of auditing work experience.
If you reside and work in the United States, then you are required to be licensed in the state where you live and practice. Most states now offer Mobility privileges that allow CPAs to service clients across state borders, but those laws can take some delicate navigation as well.
